Test 1 — The Scratch Test (Most Reliable DIY Method)

The scratch test checks the cambium layer — the thin, living layer of tissue just beneath the outer bark. In a living tree, this layer is green, moist, and slightly waxy. In a dead tree, it is brown, dry, and papery.
